Very nice image Gary! I deal with these raptors all the time, and they are plentiful in our area and great fun to watch and photograph.

Artist's Description

Although a historically eastern US species these guys found their way out west and have become well established. Unfortunately for them where there range overlaps with the endangered Spotted Owls they are being shot, mostly in western Oregon and California. Luckily for this guy he is here in Central Oregon where the Spotted Owls do not occur.

About Gary Wing

Gary Wing

Gary Wing was born in western Montana and as a child he enjoyed roaming the Rocky Mountains on foot or on horseback. In 1959 his family moved to Redmond, Oregon and he developed a love for the high desert and the Cascade Mountains. Graduating from Redmond High in 1964 he went on to Oregon State University and then worked as a ranch manager and wildlife biologist with the Federal government. Retiring in 2011, he returned to photography which he developed a love for in the early 70’s but could never seem to find time for. His photos have been featured on the cover of Bee Culture Magazine, in Range Magazine, and the 2010 book Capture Central Oregon. He recently had a showing at Smith Rock State Park. He has also shown at the Redmond Library,...
